Forty hadiths on the virtue of charity On the authority of Abu Hurairah, may God be pleased with him, on the authority of the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, who said A man was among a clearing of land, and he heard a voice in a cloud: Water the garden of a clearing, and that cloud cleared and emptied its water into a clearing. So, one of those anuses had absorbed all that water, so he followed the water. Then, there was a man standing in his garden, turning the water with his wipes, and he said to him, “O Abdullah, your name is.” So-and-so said to the name that was heard in the cloud, and he said to him, “O Abdullah, you did not ask me about my name.” He said, “I heard a voice in the clouds whose water is this, saying, ‘Irrigate a garden for your fish, and what will you do in it?’ He said, ‘As for when you say this, I look at what comes out of it, so I give a third of it in charity, and I and my children eat a third, and I put a third back into it.
